At noon on Thursday CALS was dispatched to the intersection of Stoakley rd and Barstow rd for the report of a serious MVC. M104 (PMIC Stockton) was the only medic on duty and responded from the "street". Chief 10 (Shannon) and Captain 10 (Sturmer) were at the office working with our newest PMIC (T.Thomas) when dispatched updated the call to a garbage truck overturned with 2 subjects heavily trapped. UT-10 (with 2 medics) and Command 10 (with 2 medics) added themselves to the call to provided additional ALS coverage. M104 arrived on scene first with Chief 6 and confirmed 2 subjects heavily entrapped with a prolonged extrication. Command was established by Chief 6 who checked with syscom and found aviation was down due to weather. Chief 10 arrived on location and was assigned the EMS division, 3 patients were identified, 1 being the driver who self-extricated prior to FD arrival and 2 co-workers trapped in the cab of the truck. The driver was assessed and turned over to A78 with no apparent injuries while the other two patients were categorized as pri-1 Cat-B's. Squads 2 & 6 and E21 worked feverishly to extricated the two occupants of the truck. After approx 25 mins of working both patients were extricated and removed to waiting EMS crews. ALS & BLS crews worked hard to stabilize and correct life threatening injuries before beginning transport to the trauma center. One patient being cared for by Capt.10 was so critical he was transported pri-1 to CMH for stabilization before being sent up the road to the trauma center. Once stabilized at CMH the patient was flown via Medstar 3 to Medstar trauma in DC.
